In the meantime
I apologize for the recent silence. I’ve been neck-deep in other obligations, and yesterday we returned from something much more fun, a visit with our grandkids in Washington, DC.
While we were waiting on an underground train in DC, I received a call from the editor of Galveston’s Daily News.
“Did you send us an editorial back in May about local elections?”
I did, but they hadn’t acknowledged receiving it. I figured that, since I didn’t get around to writing it until a few days after our mayoral and council elections, they’d simply passed.
“Well, I have to apologize,” the editor said. “We ran your piece this week under someone else’s name.”
I scurried online and took a screenshot after they updated the byline but before they could take down her picture.
Fortunately, she took the mistake in stride. In addition to having a sense of humor, she’s a good writer – I’ve found her work elsewhere – and has deep Galveston roots.
The piece itself is an abbreviated version of an earlier blog post, so I’ll forgive you if you skip it. Summary: For Galveston’s sake, keep parties out of local politics.
I’m winding down my outside commitments and hope to return to the subject of Galveston in this space in a few days. In my spare time I’ve been doing research on how Galveston Island’s earliest inhabitants dealt with our coast’s violent weather. More on that soon.
First, though: Our McKinney, Texas grandkids are on a road trip with their two dogs.
Here, they’re under a big sky in Palo Duro Canyon. Today they’ll be several hundred miles north, on their way toward Grand Teton National Park. What fun!
